One of the first things we should do when diagnosing a vehicle, whether or not the engine light is on or not, we should do a pre scan on every vehicle before just to see what's going on.
We can talk to the customer and discuss what's going on with the vehicle, what they have for codes, what possible problems there could be beforehand.
Then once we get approved, we can go through do our repairs and then after the fact, we would want to do a post scan on the entire vehicle to be sure there are no codes leftover.
So let's walk through how that process looks on the Chevy Equinox.
All right, so at the top of the screen we see code scan.
Now this should be available on pretty much 2006 and newer vehicles reliably.
So if we go into code scan, we see we have three choices.
We have a pre scan, which is going to be when I first start.
When I first bring the vehicle in, I want to see what's going on.
Post scan's going to be after the fact and we also have a new option for diagnostic health scan which will give us a nicer customer facing report.
So in this case we'll just do a pre scan and it's going to scan through all the different systems.
Now you'll see when I have a system and there's nothing wrong with it, we will have this green check mark and then if there is a code in the system, you see we have the yellow! It's going to depend on the vehicle, how the vehicle is set up, what type of systems they have on the vehicle.
Some vehicles take longer than others, So on this one it's going to take, you know, probably 30 seconds, maybe, maybe about a minute at most.
On some vehicles, like for Nissan's for example, you have to go through the HVAC system.
The system actually has to do a self test before it'll spit out any code.
So on those vehicles it may take a little bit longer than you're used to.
So like I said, it varies.
OK, there's my last one.
Now you see screen turns Gray and it says the system report has been saved.
Now if I scroll through, like I said, green check marks me.
Nothing wrong.
Yellow! Means there's a code.
You can also go and diagnose the code if you needed to, and then if we go down to the bottom, you'll see it also checks OBD 2 codes and a permanent codes as well.
Now in this case, you can see that that one is greyed out.
That means it's not communicating with that part of the vehicle.
So that might be another thing you would need to investigate in that case.
Now it's saved in two places.
It's saved both to the tool.
If I go down here at the bottom, I can go into my vehicle record and you see there's a vehicle system report right there.
I double tap on it.
It's going to open up in my PDF viewer and we'll zoom in a little bit to get a better look at it.
And we can see, here's our customer facing cover report.
Scroll down a little bit, we can see what needs attention and what had no issues found.
We can go down a little bit further.
It gives us more detail.
So this might be the part that you would give to the technician to see, OK, here's the codes with the code definitions.
So it can be printed from the tool, shared from the tool.
It can also be shared from your phone or tablet using the Snap on cloud service.
Now if we see right here we have the vehicle system report has uploaded to the website, I can tap on it.
It's going to give me a few a little bit more information.
If I tap on it again, you can see there's the report looks just like it did on the tool because it's the same report.
Then if I back up, we could also hit the little link and it'll ask us where we want to share it.
So we can send via SMS which would be text message, send via e-mail, which would open up your default e-mail app on the phone and then just copy the link to a clipboard to paste it elsewhere.
So once I share it with the customer, they can then approve work, I'll do the work and then I can do a clear the codes and then do a post scan after the fact.
I could also share that with them as well and I see this is a good way to help customers understand what's going on with their vehicle.
